Basically, bulk mail is a type of mail that is bulked together so that you can pay a lower rate to get it sent out. In some cases, this is also referring to mail that is for advertising. But, basically, it’s about big groups of mail that is prepped and processed at reduced rates.

How Much Mail Is Necessary?

In order to get a bulk rate for your mail, you want to be sure that you consider how many pieces that you’re sending out. Thankfully, the amount of mail is pretty low when you compare it to how much your business is likely sending out. If you’re sending out First Class mail, you only need 500 pieces. If you’re doing what is called “Marketing Mail” (which the USPS has more info about at their site), then you only need 200 pieces or 50 lbs. of mail.

What Sized Mail Do You Need to Have?

The smallest size of mail you can send is a standard postcard size – 5 inches in length, 3.5 inches in height, and less than .01 inch in thickness. First class mail can only be 6 inches long, 4.5 inches in height, and .015 inches in thickness.

Who Is Eligible to Use Bulk Mail?

As long as you are able to get a permit and pay the $235 application fee for it, you will find that you’re in a pretty solid position to get things done. If you’re only mailing parcels, you won’t have to pay a charge. The permit is called PS (Postal Service) Form number 3615, and you just need to give them info about your business and what you’ll be sending. Fill it out, go to your post office, pay the fee, and you’re ready to go.
